Fort Bowie National Historic Site

National Historic Site · Bowie, Arizona

The adobe ruins of a US Army fort in Apache Pass in south-east Arizona, established in 1862 to guard Apache Spring and the route of the Butterfield Overland Mail. The pass saw the Bascom Affair of 1861, which set off years of war with Cochise's Chiricahua Apache, and the Battle of Apache Pass in 1862. For more than two decades the fort was the base for campaigns against the Chiricahua until Geronimo's surrender in 1886, and it was abandoned in 1894. Visitors reach the ruins, the post cemetery and the spring on a mile-and-a-half trail past the old stage station — there is no road to the fort for most visitors.
