Fort Bridger State Historic Site

State Historic Site · Fort Bridger, Wyoming

A trading post founded in 1843 by the mountain man Jim Bridger and his partner Louis Vasquez to supply emigrants on the Oregon and California trails, later held by Mormon settlers and then by the US Army, and a Pony Express and Overland Stage station. The state site keeps a reconstruction of Bridger's post, army buildings and a museum. Over Labor Day weekend a large mountain-man rendezvous re-enactment fills the grounds with traders, black-powder shooting and period camps. The mountain man Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez built the trading post in 1843. Mormon settlers took it over in the 1850s, and the US Army used it as a post from 1858 until 1890. The museum is in an old barracks, and the grounds hold army-era buildings, a Pony Express display and the reconstructed trading post.
