Fort Caroline National Memorial
Historic Site · Jacksonville, Florida
In 1564 French Huguenots built a fort on the St. Johns River, a year before St. Augustine existed. In September 1565 the Spanish marched overland through a hurricane, took it at dawn, and killed most of the garrison — an act that ended French ambitions in Florida and set the Spanish colony that became St. Augustine. The fort here is a reconstruction, because the original site has never been found.
