Fort Davidson State Historic Site

Battlefield · Pilot Knob, Missouri

The earthwork fort at Pilot Knob where, on 27 September 1864, around a thousand Union soldiers held off a Confederate force several times their size during Price's Missouri Expedition, then slipped out through the enemy lines overnight and blew up their own powder magazine behind them. The crater is still there in the middle of the fort. The battle cost Price a day and roughly a thousand casualties he could not replace, and the expedition never recovered.
