Fort Davis National Historic Site

Fort · Fort Davis, Texas

A frontier army post in a box canyon on the eastern edge of the Davis Mountains, garrisoned from 1854 to 1891 to protect traffic on the San Antonio-El Paso Road, and described by the National Park Service as one of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars frontier military post in the Southwest. More than twenty restored buildings stand along Officers' Row, and the site is central to the history of the Buffalo Soldiers, who served here from 1867 to 1885.
