Fort Donelson National Battlefield

National Battlefield · Dover, Tennessee

The earthworks above the Cumberland River at Dover where, in February 1862, Ulysses S. Grant answered a request for terms with a demand for unconditional and immediate surrender, and walked away with both a nickname and a national reputation. The fall of the fort opened Tennessee to Union armies and was the first major Federal victory of the war. River batteries, the reconstructed log huts of the Confederate winter camp, a national cemetery and the Dover Hotel where the surrender was signed sit along a six-mile tour road.
