Fort Fisher State Historic Site
Battlefield · Kure Beach, North Carolina
The largest earthwork fortification in the Confederacy, built of sand and turf on a spit at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and the reason Wilmington stayed open to blockade runners until almost the end of the war. It was called the Southern Gibraltar. When it finally fell in January 1865 after the heaviest naval bombardment of the war, the Confederacy lost its last major port and Lee's supply line with it.
