Fort Frederica National Monument

National Monument · Saint Simons Island, Georgia

A 250-acre monument on St. Simons Island preserving the archaeological remains of Fort Frederica and its surrounding town, founded in 1736 by General James Oglethorpe to defend the British colony of Georgia from Spanish attack. The decisive 1742 Battle of Bloody Marsh nearby ensured Georgia would be British, not Spanish. Today visitors walk among the foundations of homes, the king's magazine, and the fort tabby walls.
