Fort Frederick State Park

Maryland State Park · Big Pool, Maryland

A stone fort on the Potomac built in 1756 to shelter settlers during the French and Indian War, and the only fort of its period in America whose original stone walls are still standing. It held British and Hessian prisoners during the Revolution, saw service again in the Civil War, and was afterwards bought and farmed by a free Black family who lived within the walls for decades. The Civilian Conservation Corps restored it in the 1930s and it now sits on the C&O Canal towpath.

The park grounds are open daily year round, generally 8 AM to sunset, with a modest service charge in season. THE FORT INTERIOR AND THE RECONSTRUCTED BARRACKS KEEP SHORTER AND LARGELY SEASONAL HOURS, generally spring through autumn and reduced or closed in winter — verify before travelling, because the walls can be walked when the buildings are shut. The MARKET FAIR in late April is the largest eighteenth-century reenactment event of the year and fills the park. Camping is seasonal.
