Fort Knox State Historic Site and Penobscot Narrows Observatory
Historic Site · Prospect, Maine
A granite fort begun in 1844 on the Penobscot to guard the river against a British attack that never came, and beside it the Penobscot Narrows Observatory - the first bridge observation tower in the United States and the tallest public bridge observatory in the world. You climb four hundred and twenty feet inside a bridge tower for the view, then walk into the darkest casemates in New England.
740 Fort Knox Road, Prospect, Maine, 04981, United States
SEASONAL, generally May through October, with the fort and the observatory on the same site and generally the same ticket. ⚠ THE OBSERVATORY CLOSES IN HIGH WIND and its lift has a history of technical faults - in 2014 thirteen people were briefly stuck at the top. Check conditions on the day. The fort grounds are the larger part of the visit and are unaffected by wind.
