Fort Larned National Historic Site
National Historic Site · Larned, Kansas
A frontier army post on the Pawnee Fork, built in the 1860s to guard the Santa Fe Trail and abandoned in 1878 when the railway made it pointless. Nine of its original sandstone buildings survive around the parade ground — barracks, officers' quarters, the commissary, the blockhouse — which makes it one of the best-preserved frontier posts in the United States and a completely different proposition from the reconstructions most western forts have become. It is free.
