A Prairie Heritage Stop Near Head Smashed In · Fort Macleod, Alberta
Fort Macleod is a prairie town of about 3,200 people on the Oldman River in southern Alberta, roughly 170 km south of Calgary. It grew around the first North-West Mounted Police post in the west, built in 1874 by a column marching from Manitoba to end the whiskey trade and bring order to the Blackfoot country. The fort was moved to its present site in the 1880s after floods, and a replica stockade now holds the Fort Museum of the North-West Mounted Police (confirm the founding story and dates). Inside are police uniforms, a Blackfoot gallery, pioneer rooms and, in summer, the Musical Ride, performed by costumed young riders. Downtown, the Main Street Provincial Historic Area keeps its early 1900s sandstone and brick shopfronts and the 1912 Empress Theatre. The town sits close to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the wind seldom drops. Hours change by season.
