Fort Macon State Park
Battlefield · Atlantic Beach, North Carolina
A five-sided brick coastal fort on the eastern tip of Bogue Banks, completed in 1834 as part of the Third System of American fortifications, besieged and taken by Union forces in April 1862, and garrisoned again in the Second World War. It is one of the smallest state parks in North Carolina at 424 acres and the second most visited, with about 1.3 million people a year - because the fort comes with a swimming beach, and almost all of it is free.
