Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine
National Monument And Historic Shrine · Baltimore, Maryland
The star-shaped brick fort at the end of Locust Point that guards the entrance to Baltimore harbour, and the place the American national anthem is about. On the night of 13 September 1814 the Royal Navy bombarded it for twenty-five hours; Francis Scott Key, held on a British ship after going out to negotiate a prisoner's release, watched from the water and found the garrison flag still flying at dawn. He wrote a poem about it. It is the only unit in the National Park System that Congress designated both a National Monument and a Historic Shrine.
