Fort McKavett State Historic Site

Fort · Fort McKavett, Texas

A frontier post above the head of the San Saba River that General Sherman is said to have called the prettiest post in Texas, and which is now one of the best-preserved examples of a Texas frontier fort — around twenty limestone buildings, many still roofed and furnished, on ground that never got built over because the town around it simply faded away.

⚠ HOURS AND ADMISSION ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them. Check thc.texas.gov before travelling; THC sites commonly close one or two days a week, and ⚠ THIS IS A LONG DRIVE FROM ANYWHERE, so a closed gate is an expensive mistake. ⚠ Ask at the visitor centre which buildings are unlocked before crossing the unshaded parade ground. Living-history events are programmed through the year and are the better visit.
