Fort Monroe National Monument
National Monument · Hampton, Virginia
A 325-acre monument at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in Hampton, Virginia. Built between 1819 and 1834, it is the largest stone fort ever built in the United States. It holds profound dual significance in African American history: it is near the site where the first enslaved Africans arrived in the English colonies in 1619, and during the Civil War, it became "Freedom's Fortress" when a Union general declared runaway slaves as "contraband of war," effectively freeing thousands.
41 Bernard Road, Hampton, Virginia, 23651, United States
Grounds open sunrise to sunset. Casemate Museum open Wed-Sun 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
