Fort Morgan
National Historic Landmark · Gulf Shores, Alabama
A masonry star fort completed in 1834 at the tip of the peninsula guarding the mouth of Mobile Bay, and the position Farragut was running past in August 1864 when he is said to have shouted the line about the torpedoes. It was besieged for two weeks after the battle and surrendered, and it stayed in military use through both world wars, so the brick fort of the 1830s is surrounded by concrete gun batteries of the 1900s. The beach and the ferry to Dauphin Island are at the end of the same road.
