Fort Mose Historic State Park
Florida State Park · St. Augustine, Florida
The site of Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, established in 1738 as the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement in what is now the United States. Spanish Florida offered freedom to anyone escaping British slavery who reached St. Augustine and converted, and the people who did built a fortified town here and defended it. It is a National Historic Landmark and the southern terminus of the Underground Railroad — running the opposite direction from the one everyone is taught.
