Fort Necessity National Battlefield
National Battlefield · Farmington, Pennsylvania
A small circular stockade in a mountain meadow where a twenty-two-year-old George Washington fought his first battle and made the only surrender of his career, on 3 July 1754. The engagement was minor and the consequences were not: it opened the French and Indian War, which became the Seven Years War, which was fought on four continents. The site also holds a stretch of the National Road, the tavern that served it, and the grave of General Edward Braddock, killed on the retreat a year later.
1 Washington Parkway, Farmington, Pennsylvania, 15437, United States
Grounds generally open daily from dawn to dusk. Visitor centre generally 9 AM to 5 PM. Mount Washington Tavern and the Braddock Grave and Jumonville Glen units keep shorter and seasonal hours — Jumonville Glen in particular closes for much of the year.
