Fort Ord Dunes State Park
State Park · Marina, California
Fort Ord Dunes State Park lies on Monterey Bay in Marina, Monterey County, on land that was part of Fort Ord, a US Army base that closed in 1994. A wide beach backed by high sand dunes, a paved coast road and old military buildings and roads give the park its mood, a mix of ecological recovery and history. Part of the old base roads has been turned into a paved route for biking and walking - confirm the trail names and lengths - and the beach reaches for miles. A campground has been planned or opened here - confirm its status. Strong wind and fog are common, the water is cold, and rip currents make swimming unsafe. Closed areas protect nesting western snowy plovers - confirm the boundaries and the season. Marina State Beach lies next door and is a separate park. Expect quiet mornings, few services, sandy dunes and big sky. Plan two to three hours, or a half day if you bike the whole route and walk the shore.

Day use runs about 8 AM to sunset, and any campground has its own check-in and check-out times with reservations booked ahead - confirm both. A fee may be charged for parking or day use, or it may be free; confirm the current rule on the State Parks page. Parts of the dunes and beach close during the plover nesting season, and old buildings or bunkers may be fenced off for safety. Fog, wind and high surf can limit access to the sand. There are few services, so bring water and food. Check the State Parks page for closures on the day you go.
