Fort Phantom Hill

Fort · Abilene, Texas

The ruins of an 1851 army post north of Abilene — a dozen stone chimneys standing in open grassland where the buildings burned away around them, plus the guardhouse, powder magazine and commissary still roofed. It was garrisoned for less than four years, abandoned, and burned the same year, and nobody has ever satisfactorily explained the name.

⚠ FREE, UNSTAFFED AND OPEN during daylight — a car park off FM 600, interpretive signs and open access. ⚠ THERE ARE NO FACILITIES OF ANY KIND: no water, no shop, no staffed restroom and nobody to ask. Bring everything, including water. ⚠ GO AT SUNRISE OR SUNSET — low sun on the chimneys is the entire point and midday gives you very little. Check the Fort Phantom Foundation calendar for occasional living history events, which are the only times anyone is on site.
