Fort Pickens
Fort · Pensacola Beach, Florida
A vast brick fortification at the western tip of Santa Rosa Island, completed in 1834 and built with slave labour to defend Pensacola Bay. It was one of only a handful of Southern forts the Union held for the entire Civil War, and from 1886 it was the prison of Geronimo and around five hundred Chiricahua Apache — men, women and children shipped east after his surrender.
