Fort Point National Historic Site

Fort · San Francisco, California

A Civil War brick fortress standing directly beneath the southern anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge, finished in 1861 and never once fired on. The bridge was redesigned around it — the arch above the fort exists because the engineer refused to demolish it — which makes this the only place you can stand inside a masonry fort and look straight up at the underside of the Golden Gate.

Long Avenue and Marine Drive, San Francisco, California, 94129, United States

Generally Friday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00. Free. Closes in high wind or heavy rain — check before travelling.
