Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

Historic Site · Manteo, North Carolina

The site of the Roanoke Colony, the first English settlement in what is now the United States, planted in 1585 and resettled in 1587 - and abandoned by 1590, with no survivors found when supply ships finally returned. The fate of the Lost Colony is the oldest unsolved mystery in American history. What survives on the ground is an earthwork, reconstructed, and a piece of Roanoke Island; what makes the visit is that the question has never been answered.

1401 National Park Drive, Manteo, North Carolina, 27954, United States

FREE and open daily, generally 9 AM to 5 PM for the visitor centre, with the grounds and trails open dawn to dusk. Closed Christmas Day. THE LOST COLONY, the outdoor drama in the Waterside Theatre on site, runs summer evenings only and is SEPARATELY TICKETED by its own company - it is not an NPS programme and it has its own schedule and box office.
