Fort Scott National Historic Site

National Historic Site · Fort Scott, Kansas

A frontier army post built in 1842 on what was then the permanent Indian frontier, sold off a decade later, and then pulled back into service as the town around it became one of the flashpoints of Bleeding Kansas and, later, a Union supply depot. Twenty structures stand around the parade ground and eleven of them are original. The site's subject is uncomfortable and it does not avoid it: the fort existed to enforce a border that was itself the product of removal, and then to fight over slavery.
