Fort Sisseton Historic State Park
Historic Site · Lake City, South Dakota
A frontier army post established in 1864 in the far north-east of the state, and unusually complete - fourteen of its original buildings still stand, which is more than almost any comparable fort on the northern plains. It was built to control the region after the 1862 Dakota War, garrisoned until 1889, restored by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and it is a long way from anywhere.
434th Avenue, Lake City, South Dakota, 57247, United States
Open year round, dawn to dusk. ⚠ A SOUTH DAKOTA PARK ENTRANCE LICENCE IS REQUIRED, charged per vehicle. The interpretive centre and the building interiors are SEASONAL, generally summer only, and outside that you are looking at exteriors on open ground. THE FORT SISSETON HISTORICAL FESTIVAL in early June is the event the site is built around.
