Fort St. John is a city of about 21,000 people at Mile 47 of the Alaska Highway in the Peace River region of north-east British Columbia, roughly 470 to 480 km north of Prince George by road. The Dunne-za and Cree peoples have lived along these rivers for thousands of years, and a North West Company trading post was set up near the Peace River in 1794, making this one of the oldest non-Indigenous settlements in the province (confirm the date and the exact site). The city boomed when the army built the Alaska Highway in 1942, and again with natural gas, oil and farming. The North Peace Museum covers fur trade, highway and energy history, the nearby Peace River valley offers wide views, and Charlie Lake has fishing and a campground. It is the largest centre in the region, with a hospital, shops and an airport, and a common overnight stop for Alaska Highway travellers heading toward the Yukon.
