Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park

National Historical Park · Charleston, South Carolina

Two forts at the mouth of Charleston harbour that between them cover a hundred and seventy years of American coastal defence, and one morning that mattered more than all the rest. Confederate batteries opened fire on Fort Sumter at half past four on 12 April 1861 and the Civil War began; the garrison surrendered after thirty-four hours without a man killed in the shooting. The Confederacy then held the fort for nearly four years while Union guns reduced a three-tier brick castle to a rubble mound. Fort Moultrie, across the water on Sullivan's Island, is the half you can drive to.
