Fort Ticonderoga

Fort · Ticonderoga, New York

A star fort built by the French as Carillon in 1755 at the portage between Lake Champlain and Lake George, and fought over repeatedly because whoever held it controlled the corridor between New York and Canada. Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys took it in a bloodless dawn raid in May 1775, and its captured cannon were dragged three hundred miles to Boston that winter to force the British out of the city.
