Fort Totten State Historic Site

Historic Site · Fort Totten, North Dakota

Sixteen original buildings around a parade ground on the south shore of Devils Lake - the best-preserved military post of the frontier era on the northern plains, and one of the most complete anywhere in the United States. It was built in 1867 to control the routes across Dakota Territory, closed as a fort in 1890, and then spent nearly seventy years as an Indian boarding school. That second history is the harder one and the site does not skip it.
