Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site
Historic Site · Williston, North Dakota
A reconstruction, on its own excavated footprint, of the most important fur trading post on the upper Missouri between 1829 and 1867. The Assiniboine, Crow, Blackfeet, Hidatsa and half a dozen other nations traded buffalo robes here for guns, cloth, beads and kettles, and the post did it without a garrison - Fort Union was a business, not an army fort. It sits on the North Dakota side of the Montana line, two miles above the confluence of the Yellowstone and the Missouri.
