Fort Wetherill State Park
Fort · Jamestown, Rhode Island
Sixty-one and a half acres on hundred-foot granite cliffs at the south-eastern corner of Conanicut Island, holding the ruins of a coastal fort used through both world wars. It is free, the parking is free, and the ruined batteries and tunnels are open to walk through in a way that would not be permitted at a maintained historic site. It is also the best shore diving in the region: clubs from New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island use the coves here year round.
3 Fort Wetherill Road, Jamestown, Rhode Island, 02835, United States
FREE, with free parking in a large lot beside the water, open daily in daylight year round. There is no admission, no ticket, no visitor centre, no interpretation and no staff of any kind — the fort ruins are simply open. ⚠ THE STRUCTURES ARE UNRESTORED AND UNSUPERVISED, with open drops, unlit passages, loose concrete and no railings anywhere, and the site sits on unfenced hundred-foot granite cliffs. Bring a torch if you intend to enter the passages, and watch children continuously. The three shore-diving sites grade as West Cove (beginner), East Cove (intermediate) and Bull Point (advanced); clubs from four states use the boat ramp year round and the car park fills early on fine, good-visibility weekends. Restrooms are provided.
