Open In Summer With A Great Rendezvous Each July. Part Of The Thunder Bay Area, With Kakabeka Falls And Sleeping Giant Nearby (Separate Live Rows). · Thunder Bay, Ontario

Fort William Historical Park is a large open-air museum on the Kaministiquia River at the south-west edge of Thunder Bay, Ontario. It is a reconstruction, not an original fort: the buildings were built in the 1970s to show the North West Company's inland headquarters of about 1815, when canoe brigades met here to trade furs. About 40 buildings, a farm and costumed interpreters show fur trading, canoe building and everyday life, and you walk through at your own pace. It suits families, history fans and school groups, and it works best when interpreters are on duty and the weather is dry. It is seasonal, usually late spring to early fall, so confirm the dates. The Great Rendezvous is held in July with extra programs and larger crowds. Allow a half day. The site is big and open, so wear walking shoes. In May and June, black flies can be fierce near the river. The visit is only as good as the staffing, so check what is running.

Fort William Historical Park is seasonal. It is commonly open from late spring to early fall, with the fullest daily programs in July and August, and reduced or closed days at the shoulders of the season. Winter access is limited, and some special events run outside the main season, so confirm what is available. Daily opening and closing times vary; check the official listing for the year you travel. Interpreters, demonstrations and the Great Rendezvous in July follow their own schedule, so the same building may be staffed one day and quiet the next. Allow time before closing, because the last admission is usually earlier than the gate closing. Food service may be limited outside peak weeks.
