Foxwoods Resort Casino

Owned And Operated By The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation; For Years The Largest Casino In The Western Hemisphere, With Six Casinos, Four Hotels And The Mashantucket Pequot Museum Alongside It · Mashantucket, Connecticut

Foxwoods opened in 1992 on the Mashantucket Pequot reservation, a nation that had been reduced to a couple of hundred acres and a handful of residents before federal recognition in 1983, and for years it was the largest casino in the western hemisphere - six casinos, four hotels, around 340,000 square feet of gaming and a small city of restaurants, shops and theatres under one roof. That is the reason most visitors come and it is not the most interesting thing here. Next door the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, funded by the casino and opened in 1998, is one of the largest and best Native-run museums in the country: a full-scale recreated sixteenth-century village you walk through, a glacial crevasse, and an unflinching account of the 1637 Mystic massacre. Both sit in deep woods twenty minutes from Mystic, and the overwhelming majority of casino visitors never walk the few hundred yards to the museum, which is the better half of the place by a considerable distance.

350 Trolley Line Boulevard, Mashantucket, Mashantucket, Connecticut, 06338, United States

The casinos are open 24 hours a day, every day. Restaurants, shops and the theatres keep their own hours, with most dining running from late morning into the night and the headline venues operating only on show nights. The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center next door keeps daytime museum hours on a reduced weekly schedule and closes on several holidays - it is a separate operation with a separate ticket.
