Franklin Mountains State Park

Subnational Park · El Paso, Texas

Twenty-four thousand acres of Chihuahuan Desert mountain wilderness lying entirely inside the city limits of El Paso — thirty-seven square miles of tilted fault-block range holding some of the oldest rock in Texas, with peaks above 7,000 feet and more than 125 miles of trail. It is generally described as the largest urban state park in the United States, and it exists because El Paso conservationists fought off development in the late 1970s.
