Franks Tract State Recreation Area
State Park · Bethel Island, California
Franks Tract State Recreation Area sits in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, east of San Francisco Bay and near Bethel Island. It is a former farm island whose levees failed in the early twentieth century, leaving a broad, shallow, flooded lake with old levee lines and other relics just beneath the surface. There is no road to it: you arrive by boat, so this is a place for anglers, hunters and boaters, not walkers or picnickers. The Delta's bass fishing is famous and the open water here is one of its best-known grounds, while the waterfowl season brings hunters at dawn. Winter tule fog can close in without warning and wind kicks up chop on the open flats. Expect no developed facilities, no shade and no help close by. Confirm launch points, rules and any fee before you go. It is not a casual sightseeing stop: a first trip is far safer with a guide or a friend who knows the channels, and a small open boat should stay off the flats when the wind is up.
Water Access Only, Bethel Island, California, 94511, United States
The tract is open water with no gate, and the state park has generally treated it as available at all hours, so there is no staffed opening time to wait for. What actually limits your day is light, tide and weather: the Delta water level rises and falls with the tides, shallow areas that float a boat at high water can ground it at low water, and winter tule fog can cut visibility to a few boat lengths until late morning. Waterfowl hunting runs only in the open season and has its own rules, check-in practices and legal shooting hours - confirm them with California Fish and Wildlife. Marinas and ramps on nearby Bethel Island keep their own hours, which are shorter in winter, so confirm before you trailer a boat out.
