Frederick C. Robie House

Historic House · Chicago, Illinois

The building most often called the masterpiece of the Prairie School, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1908 for a bicycle and motorcycle manufacturer and finished in 1910. Its cantilevered roofs run so far past the walls that contemporaries could not work out what held them up, and the whole composition is horizontal to the point of provocation on a tight Hyde Park corner lot. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 as one of eight Wright buildings.
