Summer Re Enactments With Costumed Soldiers Are Part Of The Experience. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery And The Saint John River Trail Are Within A Short Walk. · Fredericton, New Brunswick
The Garrison District is the old military quarter of Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick, on the south bank of the Saint John River. It is a National Historic Site of Canada: a garrison the British Army built from 1784, centred on Officers' Square, with the Guard House, the Old Barracks and a riverside walking trail. In July and August costumed soldiers stage the Changing of the Guard and other re-enactments on the square (confirm the schedule). The square itself is free and open all year, and it works as the city's outdoor living room. The district is small and flat, so this is not a full-day destination: it suits families, history-minded walkers and anyone passing through the province who wants a pleasant, compact old quarter. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery and Christ Church Cathedral are a short walk away. Allow two to three hours with lunch. Honestly, outside summer it is quiet and the re-enactment side is absent.
Historic military quarter on the Saint John River in the centre of Fredericton, around Officers' Square, with the Guard House, the Old Barracks and a riverside walking trail, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada
Officers' Square and the riverside trail are public outdoor space and can be walked at any hour, all year, though winter snow and short days limit the pleasure. The Guard House, the Old Barracks and the interpretive displays are seasonal, with the fullest programme in summer and reduced or no access in the cold months. Changing of the Guard and re-enactments are usually July to August on a set daily pattern, but confirm times and days before you plan around them. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the cathedral and the shops and cafes keep their own hours, and some close on Mondays or Sundays. The Saturday farmers market runs on its own morning schedule (confirm).
