Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park
Botanical Garden · Grand Rapids, Michigan
Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park sits on the east side of Grand Rapids, on about 158 acres, and it is two institutions sharing one gate: a botanical garden and a serious outdoor sculpture museum. The centrepiece is The American Horse, a bronze about 24 feet tall cast from a design Leonardo da Vinci drew and never built. Around it you find work by Rodin, Henry Moore, Claes Oldenburg, Mark di Suvero and Chihuly, set across lawns, woods and ponds. Under glass, the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory keeps a Michigan February at tropical warmth, and outside there are a Japanese garden, a Michigan farm garden and a large children's garden. It suits couples, families, art lovers and gardeners, in any season. Allow three to four hours, more for a summer concert evening. The sculpture loop is long, so wear walking shoes and ask about the tram. This is art as much as plants. Confirm tickets and dates before you drive.

The gardens and sculpture park are generally open every day of the year apart from a few holidays, with the main visiting day running from morning to late afternoon and Sunday often starting later than other days. Many seasons add one late evening, commonly a Tuesday, and summer concert nights run well past dark. Exact opening and closing times, the last-entry time and holiday closures change by season, so confirm on the official site before travelling. Special seasonal displays, the spring butterfly exhibition and the winter holiday traditions display, can carry timed tickets and separate hours. The outdoor sculpture park can close in bad weather, ice or high wind, while the conservatory and indoor spaces stay available. Arrive early for the best light and thinner crowds.
