Freedom Rides Museum

National Register Of Historic Places · Montgomery, Alabama

The restored 1951 Greyhound bus station in downtown Montgomery where the Freedom Riders arrived on 20 May 1961 and were beaten by a waiting mob while the police stayed away for a quarter of an hour. It is a small museum in a small Art Moderne building, run by the Alabama Historical Commission, and the building is the exhibit — the waiting room, the ticket counter and the loading bay are where it happened. A vintage Greyhound coach of the period stands outside.

210 South Court Street, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104, United States

Run by the Alabama Historical Commission. Short and limited hours, closed several days a week — check before walking over. Nominal admission at the door.
