Frenchmen Street

Nightlife District · New Orleans, Louisiana

Three blocks in the Faubourg Marigny, ten minutes' walk downriver from Jackson Square, where New Orleanians go to hear music. There are perhaps a dozen rooms along it — the Spotted Cat, d.b.a., Snug Harbor, the Blue Nile, Three Muses — most of them free or nearly so, most of them with a band playing from early evening until very late, and none of them anything like Bourbon Street. Whatever a visitor imagined New Orleans music would be, this is where it actually is.

400-600 Frenchmen Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70116, United States

A public street, open at all hours and free to walk. Music rooms generally run from early evening — many have a set from about 5 or 6pm — until 2am or later, with most charging no cover or a small one. Most venues are 21-and-over after a certain hour with ID checked, though some admit all ages for early sets. The Frenchmen Art Market runs in an open lot mid-block, late. Sunday to Thursday is markedly better for hearing music than the weekend.
