Friendship Hill National Historic Site
National Historic Site · Point Marion, Pennsylvania
Albert Gallatin's country house above the Monongahela in Fayette County, and a reminder that the man who was Treasury Secretary for thirteen years under Jefferson and Madison — longer than anyone before or since — is remembered by almost nobody. He financed the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition, negotiated the end of the War of 1812, and started out on this remote frontier farm trying and failing to make a fortune. The house is free, the setting is quiet, and ten miles of trails run down the bluff to the river.
223 New Geneva Road, Point Marion, Pennsylvania, 15474, United States
FREE. Grounds and trails open daily, dawn to dusk. The house is generally open daily from late spring through autumn on a daytime schedule, with reduced days in winter and closure on major holidays. Verify before travelling.
