Frilandsmuseet, the Open Air Museum
One Of The World'S Oldest Open Air Museums, Founded In 1897, With Farms, Mills And Houses Moved From Across Denmark And Its Former Territories, Set In A Large Rural Park · Kongens Lyngby, Capital Region of Denmark
Frilandsmuseet, the Open Air Museum, lies in the green northern suburbs of Copenhagen at Kongens Lyngby, and is usually described as one of the oldest and largest open-air museums in the world. Founded in 1897 and moved to its present site in the early 1900s, it is part of the National Museum of Denmark. Across a large rural park of fields, lanes, ponds and hedges stand dozens of farms, cottages, mills and workshops, taken down piece by piece in their home villages and rebuilt here - from Jutland, Funen, Zealand and Bornholm, and from lands that were once Danish, such as southern Sweden, Schleswig and the Faroe Islands. Old breeds of horses, cattle, pigs, sheep and geese graze beside the buildings, and gardens are planted as they were. People come to walk through three centuries of rural life in a few hours, for the thatched roofs and farmyards, and for a calm day out an S-train ride from the city. The honest caveat: the museum is seasonal, has been through a long renovation with some areas and buildings closed, and the site is big - confirm what is open before you go.

Seasonal: the museum is usually open from roughly April or May to October, typically Tuesday to Sunday with Mondays closed except in holiday weeks, plus some special openings such as autumn-holiday events and Christmas weekends in December - check the current season calendar, and confirm what is open, because the long renovation has closed some buildings and areas at times. From Copenhagen take the S-train (line B or Bx, confirm) to Sorgenfri station, about 25-30 minutes from the centre, then walk roughly 10 minutes to the entrance; buses also run from Lyngby station. By car it is about 15 km, 20-30 minutes, with parking by the museum. No booking is normally needed except for groups and events.
