Fur and the Moler Cliffs

Small Limfjord Island Whose Striped Moler Cliffs Hold Volcanic Ash Layers And Fossils Around 55 Million Years Old, Reached By A Short Ferry · Fur, Central Denmark Region

Fur is a small island in the Limfjord, roughly 22 square km, reached by a ferry crossing of only a few minutes from Branden at the northern tip of the Salling peninsula, north of Skive. It is famous among geologists for its moler, a pale diatom clay laid down on the sea bed roughly 55 million years ago in what is called the Fur Formation, striped with well over a hundred dark layers of volcanic ash. Along the north coast, at Knudeklint and Stolleklint, ice-age glaciers pushed these layers into dramatic folds, and the rock holds unusually fine fossils of fish, insects, birds and even turtles, many of them shown in the Fur Museum. People come to walk the beaches under the cliffs, hunt for fossils in loose stones, cycle the quiet island roads and enjoy the Limfjord light. The honest caveat: Fur is small and low-key, the cliffs are only a few dozen metres high, and it rewards those who like geology, beaches and slow days rather than visitors expecting grand scenery or a busy resort.

The island, beaches and cliffs are open all the time; the ferry from Branden runs roughly every 20 to 30 minutes from early morning to late evening, all year, with a crossing of only a few minutes - confirm the current timetable, especially late at night. The Fur Museum is usually open daily in summer, with shorter days and hours in spring and autumn and limited opening in winter - confirm. By car it is about 330 km and roughly 4 hours from Copenhagen over the Great Belt Bridge (toll), and about 1 hour 45 minutes from Aarhus via Viborg and Skive. By public transport, take the train to Skive, then a regional bus to Branden and walk onto the ferry - check Rejseplanen. No booking for the ferry as a rule.
