Galata Mevlevi Lodge
A Historic Lodge Of The Mevlevi (Whirling Dervish) Order With A Wooden Dance Hall, A Cemetery Garden And A Small Museum, Where A Sema Ceremony Is Performed On Some Evenings. A Calm Cultural Stop Near The Galata Tower, With Respect For A Living Religious Tradition · Beyoglu, Istanbul
The Galata Mevlevi Lodge is a historic dervish lodge at the Tunel end of Istiklal Avenue in Beyoglu, on Galip Dede Street, and it was founded around 1491 as the first lodge of the Mevlevi (whirling dervish) order in Istanbul, with later buildings replacing the early ones (confirm). A walled garden holds the octagonal wooden dance hall where the sema ceremony is performed, a small museum of musical instruments, calligraphy and personal objects, and a cemetery with old turbaned gravestones under tall trees. The lodge is named in memory of the poet Galip Dede, who is buried here. The sema is a Sufi prayer in movement, performed by men in white skirts and tall felt hats to the sound of the ney reed flute, and the lodge stages it on set days for visitors (confirm schedule). Come quietly, treat the ceremony as worship and not as a show, and pair the visit with the Galata Tower and the music shops of Galip Dede Street, all a short walk from Tunel.
