Galena Creek Regional Park

Washoe County Regional Park In The Jeffrey Pine Forest On The Mount Rose Highway, With A Visitor Center And Trails Up To Mount Rose Wilderness · Reno, Nevada

Galena Creek Regional Park is a Washoe County park on the Mount Rose Highway, State Route 431, about 20 to 25 minutes south-west of Reno, where the sagebrush of the Truckee Meadows gives way to a forest of tall Jeffrey pines along Galena Creek at roughly 5,500 to 6,000 feet. It is a locals' park rather than a destination: picnic areas under the pines, a cold creek to paddle in, snowplay slopes in winter, a small visitor center run with a non-profit partner, and trailheads that climb into the Mount Rose Wilderness of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The best-known walk is the Jones Creek and Whites Creek loop, a long day hike through pine and aspen to views over Reno and the valley, while short nature trails and the Bitterbrush area suit families and dog walkers. There is no lake, no lodge and no food for sale, so bring what you need. Combine it with the drive up the Mount Rose Highway to Tahoe Meadows and Lake Tahoe, or with Bowers Mansion and Davis Creek parks in Washoe Valley to the south.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the park is open daily from around sunrise or 8 am to around sunset or 8 pm, with gates or posted closing times that shift with the season, and the visitor center keeps shorter daytime hours on selected days, often closed some weekdays and in winter. Trails into the Mount Rose Wilderness have no hours. The traps that ruin a day are arriving at noon on a summer weekend when lots are full, finding the visitor center shut on a weekday, starting the long loop too late and meeting afternoon storms on the ridge, driving up for snowplay after the snow has melted, and fire or smoke closures. Confirm current times before relying on them.
