Galena Historic District

Old Town · Galena, Illinois

A lead-mining and steamboat boomtown in the far north-west corner of Illinois that was briefly larger than Chicago, went bust when the ore ran out and the river silted up, and then had no money to rebuild for a century. The result is that roughly eighty-five per cent of the buildings in the town stand inside the National Register historic district — a complete 1850s brick main street in a steep river valley, preserved by poverty rather than by design.

North Main Street, Galena, Illinois, 61036, United States

A public town, open at all times. Shops generally 10 AM - 5 PM with longer weekend hours; some close midweek in winter.
