Galleria dell'Accademia

Museo Statale, Part Of The Galleria Dell'Accademia Di Firenze E Musei Del Bargello; Within The UNESCO Historic Centre Of Florence (1982) · Florence, Tuscany

Built as a teaching collection for the art academy next door and now visited almost entirely for one object: Michelangelo's David, carved between 1501 and 1504, five metres and seventeen centimetres tall counting its base, and moved here from Piazza della Signoria in 1873 to get it out of the weather. It stands under a domed skylight at the end of a corridor lined with his four unfinished Prisoners, figures still half inside their blocks, which is the best argument anywhere for how he worked. Beyond that are rooms of gold-ground panels from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, a hall of nineteenth-century plaster casts, and a collection of Medici musical instruments including two Stradivari. It took 2.28 million visitors in 2025, more than any other Italian state museum, and since February 2026 the ticket has cost twenty euros, with names checked against identity documents at the door.
