Gamble Plantation Historic State Park

Florida State Park · Ellenton, Florida

The only surviving antebellum plantation house in south Florida, built in the 1840s from tabby — a concrete of shell, sand and lime — at the centre of a sugar plantation worked by nearly two hundred enslaved people. Judah P. Benjamin, the Confederate Secretary of State, sheltered here in 1865 while escaping to England, which is how the house came to be preserved at all.

3708 Patten Avenue, Ellenton, Florida, 34222, United States

Grounds open 8:00 a.m. until sundown daily. THE MANSION IS SEEN BY GUIDED TOUR ONLY at set times on limited days — check the schedule before travelling.
