Gammel Estrup Manor Museum
Moated Renaissance Manor Furnished As A Museum Of Danish Manor Life, With The Danish Agricultural Museum Beside It · Auning, Central Denmark Region
Gammel Estrup is a moated Renaissance manor house near Auning on Djursland, in east Jutland, about 45 minutes by car from Aarhus. The present red-brick buildings with their towers and wide moat date mostly from the 1500s and 1600s, and for centuries the estate belonged to a small number of noble families, said to include the Brock and later the Scheel lines - confirm. Since the 20th century it has been a museum of Danish manor life, with rooms furnished as they were used - a great hall, portraits, tapestries, a chapel, kitchens and servants' quarters - plus formal gardens, an orangery and parkland. The Danish Agricultural Museum stands beside it, in the old farm buildings, with tractors, tools and the story of farming, usually on the same ticket - confirm. People come for a calm half day that shows how the Danish landed class lived and how the farms around them worked. The honest caveat: it is quiet and rural, hard to reach without a car, often closed on Mondays and shorter-houred off season, and it is a manor, not a royal palace.
